Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the old walled city was painted its famous terracotta pink in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales, and the colour has been a proud tradition ever since.
Between the hilltop grandeur of Amber Fort, the intricate facade of Hawa Mahal, and the still-inhabited City Palace, Jaipur packs centuries of Rajput history into a single, walkable old city. Everything international travellers ask before visiting the Pink City.
In 1876, Maharaja Ram Singh II had the old city painted a terracotta-pink colour to welcome Prince Albert (later King Edward VII) on his visit to India. The tradition stuck, and buildings in the old walled city are still required to keep the pink facade today.
Jaipur is about 268 km (5–6 hours by car) from Delhi, and around 235 km (~5 hours) from Agra. Both routes are included as private transfers on our Golden Triangle packages.
We don't offer or arrange elephant rides at Amber Fort due to genuine animal-welfare concerns. Instead, we book a private jeep directly up to the fort entrance — faster, more comfortable, and just as memorable.
A full day comfortably covers Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar. A half-day tour works if you're short on time, though you'll see fewer sites. Two days lets you add bazaar shopping and Nahargarh Fort at a relaxed pace.
October to March is best — cool, clear days ideal for a full day of walking between forts and palaces. April to June gets very hot, often above 40°C.
